In 1855, when the Colt Firearms factory was founded,
its energetic and imaginative owner, Samuel Colt, began
building the elaborate group of buildings and grounds
that became known as Coltsville.
When Colt died in 1862, the company was a major manufacturer
of arms during the Civil War. Two years later, in a
fire thought to have been set by Confederate sympathizers,
the Armory was once again ruined. Colt's widow, Elizabeth,
rebuilt an exact replica of the Colt's Old Armory in
1867 where it still stands today.
